CC8 - Y5/6 - W5: Tasks & Questions

W5 - Page 182 to half way through page 223

TASKS - Choose from the following

1. ART - Draw the fight scene with George Nelson in the alleyway. TWINKL TEMPLATE Or draw a picture of Christina.

2. Create a MAP showing the route that they take on their mission.

3. Steve and Numbers activity. TWINKL TEMPLATE

4. RESEARCH - Research the Inland Taipan TWINKL TEMPLATE or Research Albert Einstein and find out what amazing things he discovered.

5. HANDS-ON - Brand mentions the line, "You can't always get what you want." Find out what song it's from and record your own version of the chorus. 
6. WRITING - Pretend you are in Mx Bixby's class, and write a poem about one of the characters in the story.

7. VOCABULARY - Find the meaning of the following words: Herpetologist, Devious, Skeptically, Disintegrate, Obnoxiously.

8. MAKERSPACE (Anyway you want! Minecraft, model, 3D print....) - Make your own bottle of non-alcohol juice to take to Ms Bixby.

Miss Honey’s Cottage - The Names
TASKS - Choose from any of the following:

ART TASK:
  1. Draw an illustration of Miss Honey's cottage, using the description in the book. Describe her house in a sentence or two underneath.
RESEARCH TASKS:
2. The class can investigate the life of Roald Dahl from a historical perspective. For example, they can create timelines and fortune lines, examine what changed in his life and the causes of change, etc.
3. Lots of miracles occur when Matilda is around. Find out what we mean by 'miracle'. If you could make a miracle occur, what would it be?
WRITING TASKS:
4. Write Miss Honey’s diary entry for the day, explaining her reflections on what has happened. How does she feel about Matilda’s special power? How does she feel about Miss Trunchbull and life in Crunchem Primary School?
5. Create a set of class rules for when Miss Honey is teaching. Can you create a set for when Miss Trunchbull comes to teach?
HANDS ON TASK:
6. Make a ‘favourite word’ collage using words from the story.
7. VOCABULARY TASK: Define the meaning of the following words from the text:gush, phenomenon, precocious, conceit, glimmer, bemused, hearth, delicacy, rouse.
8. Watch the trailer for the musical version of Matilda. Could you compose a song for part of the story?
9. MINE CRAFT TASK - Create the village in which Miss Honey lives. Add as much detail as possible!

CC8 - Y5/6 - W4: Tasks & Questions

W4 - Half way through page 141 to page 181

TASKS - Choose from the following

1. ART - Draw a picture of Brand. Write a description of him underneath. Or draw a picture of George Nelson. TWINKL TEMPLATE

2. Make a WANTED POSTER for George Nelson. TWINKL TEMPLATE

3. Create a comic strip of the Chase scene between the boys and George Nelson.

4. Make an Acrostic Poem using the letters MS BIXBY'S LAST DAY.

5. Make a poster with the quote, "The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it." TWINKL TEMPLATE

6. RESEARCH - Steve is from Japan. Research Japan and present your findings in a poster or slideshow.

7. HANDS-ON - Pick a scene in the story so far. Either act it out in class or create it on the puppet pals app.
8. WRITING - Pretend you are Brand and write a letter to his dad encouraging him to keep trying.

9. VOCABULARY - Find the meaning of the following words: Vigorously, Compatibility, Reverberating, Congregation, Dilapidated.

Lavender - The Second Miracle
TASKS - Choose from any of the following:

ART TASKS:
  1. Draw a newt, that lived in the muddy pond at the bottom of Lavender’s garden. Write one fact about what Newts are or do alongside your picture. Add colour.
  2. Draw a picture or make a storyboard showing your special power taking hold.
RESEARCH TASK:
3. Research the Battle of Waterloo. What was it and when did it happen? Why?
WRITING TASKS:  
4. Miss Trunchbull uses many unpleasant terms to describe children such as ‘foul carbuncle’, ‘nauseating little warts’ and ‘ignorant little slug’. Make a list of ten such terms and then generate positive phrases in their place. For example ‘poisonous little pockmark’ could be transformed into ‘pretty little peach’. Children could use dictionaries and thesauruses to expand their vocabulary.
5. Nigel learns how to spell ‘difficulty’ using a mnemonic. A mnemonic is any technique that helps us remember information. Model and scaffold how to make a mnemonic to remember how to spell Miss Trunchbull. Make an acrostic of letters of her name to describe her. For example: Miss Trunchbull is Truly, Really, Unbelievably Not Capable, Having Bullied Us Little Losers! Make some for: Miss Trunchbull, Matilda, Miss Honey, Mr and Mrs Wormwood and others such as Lavender or Bruce Bogtrotter
6. Compare Miss Honey with Miss Trunchbull. Which words do you choose for each?

7. Make a movie of a story in which you have a special power. What do you do? What happens?
HANDS ON TASKS:
8. In groups, discuss these questions: - If you could have a special power, what would it be? - What would you be able to do? - When could you use it? - How could you use your special power to help people? - How can you discover your special power? Pairs or individuals come up and mime a special power without speaking. The rest of the class can guess what the power is.
9. VOCABULARY TASK: Define the meaning of the following words from the text: satchel, deed, distaste, expel, diabolical, aloft, squirming, plummeted, scalp, pantomime, insolence, indelible. bane, vile. serenity, vouch.
10. MINECRAFT TASK - Create what the Chokey would look like using Minecraft. Add as much detail as possible!

Thanks to everyone who shared work as well. It is delightful to see Twinkl replying to some of our students who have done their created tasks. I just love seeing everyone's work.

Such amazing variety of tasks - and those Mine Craft creations of Matilda's house both inside and out were awesome!!
